The Tutoring Center at Highline College invites you to apply for student employment as a Tutor. The mission of the Highline College Tutoring Center is to provide academic support to all students enrolled at Highline College. Our primary goal is to create an open atmosphere of learning for students. We assist students in numerous academic disciplines through a variety of tutoring techniques by addressing each student’s needs in a constructive environment. A part of our mission is to work closely with our faculty, as well as other offices, that support student services.
All tutors are required to participate in ongoing training. The goal of our tutor training program is to help tutors promote student independence, active learning, and motivation. We provide opportunities for tutors to develop professionally. We also offer national tutoring certification from the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) for tutors that complete the training program.
Broad Scope and Function:
The Tutoring Center Tutors will support the Highline College Faculty in the implementation of academic support services for most of the courses. Tutors should have a sufficient knowledge of the subjects they are tutoring as well as effective tutoring techniques. Tutors should successfully pass the tutor training course with a grade of 3.5 or better.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Learn tutoring techniques through participation in tutor training sessions.
- Establish and maintain rapport with students and faculty, and respect their right to confidentiality at all times.
- Work with Highline College Tutoring Staff to develop a work schedule that allows for time to travel to school, travel between classes, and to prepare for one’s own courses.
Minimum Requirements:
- Minimum 3.5 in discipline being tutored.
- Minimum of a 2.5 Cumulative GPA to be eligible for on-campus student employment.
- Currently enrolled in at least 6 credits at Highline College.
- Documentation of your academic performance, such as a Highline instructor’s signature on your application, a transcript, a report card, or a letter of recommendation from someone with first-hand knowledge of your academic achievement.
- The ability to handle multiple tasks in a responsible and reliable manner.
- The ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of students.
- Respect for the goals and experiences of a diverse group of students, staff, and faculty, including but not limited to age, gender, race, ethnicity, and national origin.
- Consistently high standards of ethical conduct working with students, staff, and faculty.
- Excellent leadership, organizational skills, and professional conduct.
- Willingness to work as a team member with other students, staff, and faculty members of Highline College.
